audio: Russ Roberts Talks to Ed Leamer on the Data of the Business Cycle

I can’t recommend more highly Russ Roberts’ conversation with Ed Leamer on the stylized facts of the business cycle and the nature of economic explanation.

I’ll comment more here later. But before then, I do have a question for Austrian macroeconomists who read this blog. Is there a paper out there which uses the Hayekian microeconomic explanatory machinery to explain the stylized facts presented by Leamer of the time staged character of post-WWII booms, busts, and recoveries?

The closest thing to this I can imagine are the various introductions to the fourth edition of Rothbard’s America’s Great Depression. With every new edition, Rothbard would write a new introduction that applies Hayek’s boom-and-bust analysis to the latest bout of monetary mistakes that preceded the book’s publication.

Taken together, they come close to what you’re mentioning.
