Perhaps no economist is more well known than Hayek for his repeated criticisms of the “Homo Economicus” construct (see for example Hayek’s Law, Legislation, and Liberty). I’ve never come across a Michael Lind discussion of Friedrich Hayek were Lind doesn’t demonstrate his profound lack of familiarity with Hayek’s work. Lind does it yet again in his current review of Francis Fukuyama’s The Origins of Political Order in the leftist New York Times Book Review, where Lind erroneously and laughably contrasts Fukuyama with “libertarians like Friedrich Hayek, who try to explain society in terms of Homo economicus”. Lind is one of those who gives “second hand dealers in ideas” undeserved bad name — as does the NY Time Book Review section.
