A TALE OF TWO RECESSIONS -- AND TWO REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS:
Hoover raised tax rates, meddled with the market by trying to prevent prices from falling after the late 1920s bubble, increased the regulation of industry, and supported the protectionist Smoot-Hawley Act.

Bush .. cut tax rates in response to the 2001 recession, let market forces determine prices after the late-1990s bubble, supported deregulation, and .. has generally avoided protectionist nostrums.
